I was using my 790 this weekend, hit a bump and the machine shut down completely. Upon investigation, my positive terminal wire was about corroded off. I put it back on .. I had juice to turn the machine over, but it wouldn't start. I'm hoping a new terminal hookup on the battery will do the trick. Has anyone else had this problem? Should I be checking other areas as well?

Thanks so much for the info/heads up. I haven't checked my fuses, so I'll do that tonight. I have put on new terminals and should have the Optima battery delivered in the next couple of days. Hopefully that will do the trick.
I'll keep ya posted .. thanks again for the info!

Clean all of that corrosion up ASAP and soak all of the terminals and cable ends in a heavy solution of hot water and baking soda to neutralize any corrosion left. Reassemble and spray the battery connectors with a good coat of corrosion prevention compound. (usually some red gooey stuff for protecting battery conection in a spray canZ) I use CPC compound used on the flight line for corrosion protection in aviation applications. Also carefully inspect the radiator area for corrosion from the battery as well. It can get in the radiator too. Really bad location to put the battery. ....

I am buying a used 790 from a dealer, and the one thing that was really ugly on it was the battery terminals. One had a golf ball sized gob of blue green corrosion on it. I asked that after they clean it up the inspect it and if the battery cable was at all questionable (which I was confident it would be), that they put new battery cables on it. They ended up not only changing the cables, but the battery too, put in a brand new JD battery even though it had cranked fine.
I have had pretty good success with putting a bunch of wheel bearing grease all over battery terminals to seal out the oxygen and prevent corrosion. You've got to really work it up into the end of the wire and the underside of the clamp, but my battery terminals stay nice and clean. Keeping the top of the battery clean is also very important.

I have always used petroleum jelly to coat the terminals and posts. It is nice and clean, easy to clean up and works very well. The heat seems to spread it around nicely on any spot you missed and it stays corrosion free . The little red and green felt washers seem fine, I have used them in the past. ....

I'm not saying it is the correct way, but for many years all I've ever done os put a few drops of motor oil on top of the posts at oil change time. I've been told it will ruin the battery, etc., etc., but I've really never had a battery go bad that was traced to me puting oil on the posts. I tried the red spray can stuff, it really never gets underneath where it's needed. Oil works and it's cheap. Frank. ....

Matt, I have 790 also since 4/2000. Had same problem. I replaced battery cables with heavy duty ones from car parts store. Cleaned and painted rusted areas and use commercial battery terminal cleaner/protectorant. No problems since, they also are not corroding since new cables installed (2 years?) could be a problem w/ with OEM JD cables? ....

Folks .. thank you so much for all the info. I pulled everything out of the front end and re-did the works, right down to a new Optima D51R battery. I had some acid damage to the paint, luckily not too bad, but I had to sand, primer and repaint a bit. I had also blown a fuse to the Control Box and replaced it. I pieced everything back together and she fired right up. I just need to get some 'goo' on the terminals to prevent this from happening again and hopefully I'm good to go for some time. Thanks for all the info/tips/tricks. I'm making sure my buddies are checking out there rigs as well. Much appreciated ... Matt ....
